Role Overview

Job Overview

Microsoft is hiring a Service Engineer II in Bangalore, Karnataka, for its Microsoft Advertising organization. This full-time opportunity combines software engineering, technical service engineering, automation, production support, and AI-assisted development. The role is designed for engineers who enjoy investigating difficult technical problems, building practical automation, and working directly with engineering teams to improve reliability and customer experience.

As part of the Technical Service Engineering team within Advertiser Support Trust & Safety, you will help keep advertising platforms and customer workflows healthy. Your work will span services, APIs, data, distributed systems, internal tools, and production environments. You will investigate reliability, performance, and data-quality issues, identify root causes, develop engineering fixes, and create automation that reduces repetitive operational work.

The position also emphasizes modern AI-assisted engineering. You will be expected to use AI coding tools as part of everyday development while reviewing generated output carefully for correctness, security, maintainability, and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate complex reliability, performance, and data-quality problems across advertising services, APIs, and customer workflows.
  • Build automation, services, scripts, and internal web tools that reduce manual support activities and improve operational efficiency.
  • Develop production-quality software and contribute fixes, monitoring improvements, alerting capabilities, shared libraries, and engineering tools.
  • Perform root-cause analysis after incidents and work with engineering teams to complete corrective actions and long-term improvements.
  • Build and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end automated tests for important workflows.
  • Participate in release readiness activities and testing efforts to help improve production quality.
  • Communicate clearly during live-site incidents by sharing investigation progress, service alerts, and useful technical guidance.
  • Analyze escalation trends and operational data to identify recurring problems and recommend engineering improvements.
  • Contribute to product and engineering roadmap discussions by connecting technical issues with customer and business impact.
  • Create knowledge-base content and self-service troubleshooting resources for support teams.
  • Mentor colleagues by sharing debugging approaches, automation practices, and technical knowledge.

Required Skills

Candidates should have strong programming fundamentals and professional experience in software, service, systems, network, or related engineering. The role requires proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language, with C#, Java, Python, and TypeScript or JavaScript specifically identified as relevant options.

Experience building automation or services that communicate with APIs, databases, and distributed systems is important. You should be comfortable reading logs, analyzing metrics and traces, investigating production behavior, and identifying the underlying cause of incidents.

The role also requires practical experience using AI-based coding tools on a regular basis. Candidates should understand that AI-generated code needs technical review and validation, particularly when security, reliability, performance, or customer data may be involved.

Preferred Skills

Experience working with cloud platforms, CI/CD practices, observability, internal web applications, REST APIs, SQL, and distributed systems can strengthen your profile. Familiarity with Kusto Query Language or a comparable query language is also relevant.

Engineers who have worked in live-site environments, handled escalations, performed post-incident reviews, or built self-service operational tooling may be particularly well suited. Experience with monitoring and alerting, automated testing, and production support is valuable for this position.

Education

A Bachelor's degree is required in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or a related technical field. The role also requires at least three years of technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, systems engineering, or industrial controls.

Experience

The minimum requirement is 3+ years of technical experience in a relevant engineering discipline. Candidates should be able to demonstrate hands-on software development, automation, debugging, and production troubleshooting experience.

Experience with distributed services and APIs is especially relevant. Applicants should highlight situations where they diagnosed complex failures, improved reliability, automated manual processes, or delivered production fixes. Experience working with engineering teams to resolve incidents and prevent their recurrence is also useful.

Required Technologies

  • C#
  • Python
  • TypeScript
  • JavaScript
  • Java
  • REST APIs
  • SQL
  • Kusto Query Language (KQL)
  • Azure
  • GitHub
  • Azure DevOps
  • CI/CD
  • Logging
  • Metrics
  • Distributed tracing
  • Monitoring
  • Alerting
  • GitHub Copilot
  • ChatGPT

The exact technology mix may vary by project, but candidates should focus on technologies they have actually used and be prepared to explain their practical contribution.

Soft Skills

Strong analytical thinking is central to this role. You should be able to break complex production problems into manageable parts, evaluate evidence from multiple sources, and communicate findings clearly.

Communication is equally important because the position involves live-site events, engineering partnerships, stakeholder updates, and knowledge sharing. The ability to explain technical issues to different audiences helps teams make faster and better decisions.

Ownership, curiosity, adaptability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are also valuable. Candidates should be comfortable working collaboratively while taking responsibility for technical outcomes and following issues through to completion.

Benefits of Working in this Role

This opportunity provides practical exposure to software engineering, production operations, cloud services, automation, distributed systems, observability, and AI-assisted development. Engineers can work on problems where improvements to reliability and automation have a direct connection to customer experience and operational efficiency.

The role also offers opportunities to strengthen skills in root-cause analysis, production engineering, automated testing, service monitoring, and cross-team collaboration. Building internal tools and mentoring others can broaden your technical influence beyond individual software components.

Work Mode

The job is based in Bangalore and follows a hybrid working arrangement with an expectation of working from the office four days per week. The position is full-time and may require less than 25% travel.

Location

This Service Engineer II position is based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is suitable for experienced software, service, systems, or network engineers with at least three years of relevant technical experience. It is particularly appropriate for candidates who enjoy troubleshooting production systems while also writing software and automation.

Applicants with experience in C#, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, APIs, SQL, Azure, CI/CD, observability, and distributed systems should consider this role. Engineers who regularly use AI coding assistants and understand how to validate AI-generated solutions can also align well with the position.

Candidates should be prepared to meet Microsoft's required security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud background check specified for the role.

Career Growth

The position can help engineers expand from individual technical problem solving into broader service ownership and reliability engineering. Working with multiple engineering teams can provide exposure to architecture, production operations, automation, cloud services, customer-impact analysis, and product improvement.

Continued work with AI-assisted engineering tools can also build modern development skills. Mentoring colleagues and creating self-service troubleshooting resources can strengthen communication and technical leadership capabilities.

Application Advice

Tailor your resume around measurable engineering outcomes. Highlight examples of production incidents you resolved, automation you created, APIs or services you developed, and improvements you made to reliability, performance, or operational efficiency.

Clearly identify your programming languages and cloud experience. If you use GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or another AI coding tool professionally, describe how you validate generated code and use AI responsibly rather than simply listing the tool.

Also emphasize experience with logs, metrics, traces, CI/CD, automated testing, root-cause analysis, distributed systems, and cross-functional engineering. Since the position is based in Bangalore with regular office attendance, ensure your application accurately represents your relevant experience and availability.
