Role Overview

Job Overview

Microsoft is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Windows Cloud division, with a focus on modern data engineering and cloud-based analytics. The role is designed for an experienced engineer who can build, operate, and improve scalable data platforms that turn large volumes of operational and business information into reliable datasets and actionable insights.

The position supports Microsoft's Windows cloud ecosystem, including cloud-powered desktop experiences such as Windows 365 Cloud PC and Azure Virtual Desktop. You will work across the complete data lifecycle, from ingestion and transformation to modeling, orchestration, monitoring, and live-site support. The role combines software engineering, data engineering, cloud technologies, analytics, and operational excellence.

This opportunity is well suited to experienced data engineers and software engineers who enjoy solving large-scale data problems and working with technologies such as Microsoft Fabric, Spark, Azure data services, SQL, Python, PySpark, and cloud analytics platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain scalable data pipelines that collect, transform, and organize complex operational and business data.
  • Develop reliable data models and trusted datasets for analytics, reporting, automation, and business decision-making.
  • Build cloud-based data solutions using Microsoft Fabric, Spark, data warehousing, and modern orchestration technologies.
  • Establish data quality, monitoring, availability, and performance practices across data pipelines and platforms.
  • Work with product managers, program managers, engineers, business stakeholders, and data consumers to turn business requirements into practical technical solutions.
  • Improve data platform capabilities through automation, deployment improvements, CI/CD practices, metadata management, and operational tooling.
  • Support production data services by investigating incidents, identifying root causes, applying corrective actions, and improving platform resiliency.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, technical best practices, and adoption of modern data engineering approaches.
  • Help improve the maintainability, reliability, scalability, and operational performance of enterprise data platforms.

Required Skills

Candidates should have strong software engineering and data engineering fundamentals. Experience designing or supporting data pipelines, ETL or ELT processes, data models, and analytical solutions is essential.

Strong SQL knowledge is required, along with practical experience in one or more modern data engineering technologies. Relevant programming and processing skills include C#, Python, PySpark, Spark, Spark SQL, Scala, and distributed data processing techniques.

The role also requires experience with cloud-based data platforms and modern data engineering practices. Candidates should understand how to design scalable pipelines, manage transformations, create data models, and operate data services in enterprise environments.

Experience with source control, continuous integration and continuous delivery, automated testing, monitoring, data quality management, and DevOps practices is important. Candidates should also be comfortable supporting production systems and responding to data-related incidents.

Preferred Skills

Experience with Microsoft's modern analytics ecosystem is highly relevant. Candidates who have worked with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, OneLake, or comparable cloud data platforms will be well aligned with the position.

Knowledge of enterprise analytics, reporting, governance, privacy, and compliance practices is also valuable. Experience working with business stakeholders and converting complex operational data into useful insights can further strengthen an application.

Education

A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is required with 7 or more years of technical engineering experience involving programming. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with a Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline and 5 or more years of experience in software development, data modeling, or data engineering. Equivalent practical experience may also be considered.

Experience

The role requires substantial professional experience. Candidates following the Bachelor's degree path should have at least 7 years of technical engineering experience. Candidates following the Master's degree path should have at least 5 years of relevant software development, data modeling, or data engineering experience.

Relevant experience includes data pipeline development, ETL or ELT engineering, data modeling, distributed processing, cloud analytics, production data platform operations, and enterprise reporting solutions.

Required Technologies

The technology environment includes Microsoft Fabric, Spark, SQL, Python, PySpark, Spark SQL, C#, Scala, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, OneLake, data warehouses, cloud-based analytics platforms, CI/CD, source control, automated testing, monitoring, metadata management, and DevOps methodologies.

Candidates may also work with distributed data processing technologies and modern cloud data services. Strong SQL skills and practical experience with scalable data pipelines are particularly important for this Senior Software Engineer role.

Soft Skills

Strong communication and collaboration skills are important because the role involves working with engineering teams, program managers, product stakeholders, business partners, and data consumers. Candidates should be able to explain technical concepts clearly and understand business requirements before translating them into engineering solutions.

Problem-solving ability is also essential, particularly when investigating production data issues or improving platform reliability. A successful engineer should be comfortable balancing technical quality, scalability, performance, maintainability, and business priorities.
