Job Overview

Eaton is hiring an Associate Engineer- Embedded for its Research & Development Engineering department in Hadapsar, Pune, Maharashtra. The role focuses on developing and maintaining embedded firmware for microcontroller- and processor-based platforms, with work spanning firmware architecture, device interfaces, testing, and product lifecycle documentation.

The position is listed as hybrid and is intended for candidates with 0–1 years of experience in embedded software or firmware development. Relevant internships or project experience may be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and integrate embedded firmware written in C and C++ for microcontroller- and processor-based systems.
  • Implement and integrate bootloaders and secure boot capabilities, along with firmware update, rollback, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Build and support base software, board-support packages, hardware-abstraction layers, and peripheral device drivers.
  • Configure and develop software for real-time operating systems (RTOS), including tasks, scheduling, interrupts, timers, inter-task communication, and resource management.
  • Support embedded cybersecurity implementation through secure coding, authentication, access control, cryptographic services, vulnerability remediation, and threat mitigation.
  • Develop and test hardware and software interfaces using relevant communication protocols and peripheral connections.
  • Translate system and product needs into software requirements, designs, interfaces, and test cases, maintaining traceability throughout development.
  • Contribute to firmware for data center controllers, including applications related to power, fans, sensors, rack management, and power supplies.
  • Support embedded development for electrical-sector products used in monitoring, protection, control, and power management.
  • Perform unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop, and system testing; investigate and debug issues using standard embedded development tools.
  • Participate in code reviews, static analysis, defect resolution, configuration management, and continuous integration and delivery activities.
  • Create and maintain requirements, design documents, test evidence, release notes, and other software lifecycle records.

Required Skills and Technical Knowledge

  • Proficiency in embedded C programming and working knowledge of C++.
  • Fundamental understanding of microcontrollers and systems-on-chip (SoCs), memory, interrupts, timers, watchdogs, and board bring-up.
  • Hands-on exposure to an RTOS and familiarity with tasks, scheduling, semaphores, queues, and concurrency.
  • Understanding of bootloader operation, secure boot, firmware updating, rollback, and recovery concepts.
  • Exposure to base software, board-support packages, hardware-abstraction layers, and device-driver development.
  • Knowledge of embedded communication protocols and interfaces, including I2C, SMBus, PMBus, SPI, UART, CAN, Modbus, GPIO, and Ethernet, as applicable.
  • Awareness of embedded cybersecurity principles, secure coding, authentication, cryptography, threat modeling, and vulnerability management.
  • Ability to interpret system requirements and prepare software requirements, designs, test cases, and traceability information.
  • Experience or practical familiarity with debugging tools, oscilloscopes or logic analyzers, Git, issue tracking, unit testing, and static analysis.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Awareness of MISRA C/C++ guidelines and embedded software development lifecycle practices is preferred.
  • Exposure to firmware for data center controllers or products in the electrical sector is an advantage.
  • Relevant internships or academic and personal project experience may be considered for the experience requirement.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Instrumentation, or Software Engineering, or a related discipline, is required. The stated discipline options align with the role’s embedded firmware and hardware-facing engineering responsibilities.

Experience

The role requires 0–1 years of experience in embedded software or firmware development. Candidates with relevant internship or project experience may be considered. The job description does not specify a required graduation batch or salary range.

Technologies and Development Environment

  • C and C++: Embedded C proficiency and working knowledge of C++ are central to firmware development for the target platforms.
  • RTOS: Exposure to real-time operating systems and their task scheduling, synchronization, communication, and resource-management concepts.
  • Embedded interfaces: I2C/SMBus/PMBus, SPI, UART, CAN, Modbus, GPIO, ADC, PWM, and Ethernet are named for interface development and testing, as applicable.
  • Git and CI/CD: Version control, configuration management, and participation in CI/CD activities are part of the development workflow.
  • Debugging and verification: Standard embedded debugging tools, oscilloscopes or logic analyzers, unit and integration testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, system testing, and static analysis support quality and defect investigation.
  • Firmware security: Bootloaders, secure boot, update and recovery mechanisms, secure coding, authentication, access control, and cryptographic services are relevant to the work.

Professional Skills
